Best Podcasts for Trail Running

Over the course of 15 years as a self-proclaimed runner, I have learned only recently that trail running is a sport onto itself. It is consistently physically tough and mentally taxing. But isn’t that the case for all the things in life truly worth doing?

I am not in the habit of making New Year’s Resolutions, however, health always becomes a priority for me after too much indulging over the holidays. One of the best ways I know how to get in shape fast in the great outdoors is trail running. Going on a run along my a forested route or waterside path calms my mind to a point where I forget how much my legs and lungs are burning. I love listening to podcasts as a way to stay motivated and entertained while huffing along my favorite outdoor trail.

Below are my recommendations for podcasts depending on what trail run you’re in the mood for! Whether you’re a beginning jogger or seasoned runner, there following will surely help you go the extra mile:

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The Dirtbag Diaries / For runs that cut through wide, open spaces.

Favorite recent episode: To Infinity

Dirtbag Diaries Podcast

There is something so freeing about running through a wide, open field, chasing down an endless horizon. Dirtbag Diaries features interviews of some top notch outdoor enthusiasts along with inspiration to keep pushing toward your goals. One of my favorite benefits of trail running is having a clear head afterward and this podcast helps center my mind even more.

Lore / For runs along a shady, forested path.

Favorite recent episode: Mary, Mary

It’s no secret that I love reading scary stories in nature. Thankfully, Aaron Manke created Lore so I can consume spooky tales while running through a dimly lit forest. This podcast releases episodes biweekly and, depending on how creepy the story is, you may find me running a little quicker than usual while glancing behind me to check for ghosts or monsters. You can never be too sure 😉

Hidden Brain / For runs on switchbacks with varied terrain.

Favorite recent episode: Getting Unstuck

Hidden Brain Podcast

The episodes released by the Hidden Brain podcast highlight interesting topics in psychology and social sciences. The host, Shankar Vendatam, has a soothing and crisp voice that catches and holds my attention. The quick pace and clear sequence of this podcast help focus my mind while pushing through the pain of climbing switchbacks on a varied terrain.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Happier / For runs on flat paths next to water.

Favorite recent episode: What’s Your One Word Theme for the New Year?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a podcast with the title ‘Happier’ fills my joy tank and boosts my mood. I look forward to listening to this weekly podcast every Wednesday and enjoy the happiness tips and personal stories discussed by the hosts, Gretchen Rubin and her sister Elizabeth Craft. Tune into this podcast while running along a sunny path by the water and I guarantee your day, nay, your week will be better for it!
